Huangyingtun Fm
Type Locality and Naming
No type section was assigned when Guo Hongjun proposed the formation. A composite section, the Huangguaying-Sanhetun section, measured by the Second Regional Survey Institute of Jilin Bureau of Geology in 1985, and was is selected as the representative section of the formation by Li D. (1997). The section is located at two neighbor villages, the Huangguaying Village (lower part of the section) and the Sanhetun Village (upper part of the section) respectively, lying about 34 km east of the seat of Panshi City (126°28'00”E, 42°52’00”N). In this composite section, the formation is 4251.7 m thick. The Huangyingtun Formation was first published by Jilin Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (1988). The name is derived from Huangyingtun Village, Panshi County, Jilin Province. The formation name was originally appeared in a 1962 manuscript by Guo Hongjun from Changcun College of Geology (Now Jilin University). This formation spans the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary.
Synonym: (黄莺屯组)
Lithology and Thickness
The Huangyingtun Formation is a sequence of metamorphic rocks, the primitive rocks of which are basic or acidic volcanic rock, argillaceous rock, sandstone and limestone. The formation can be divided into three parts: Lower part is dominated by tourmaline- and garnet-bearing muscovite-biotite gneiss; Middle part is dominated by leptite and graphite-bearing leptite, alternated with cherty-striped marble and graphite-bearing cherty-striped marble; Upper part is dominated by leptite, intercalated occasionally cherty-striped marble. [Note: "Leptite is A near obsolete term for a fine-grained banded, gneissose to granulose or hornfelsic, feldspathic metamorphic rock of varied origin, mainly composed of feldspar and quartz with subordinate mafic minerals. They have been variably interpreted as metamorphosed volcanics, pyroclastics, or sediments." (From MinDat.org)]. The Huangyingtun Formation represents a suite of marine acidic-volcanic and sedimentary formations.
